PROJECT #FINDNEWFRIENDS: Dana Langer '21
Interview and Photos by Mia Risher
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I am from Munich, Germany.
HAVE YOU LIVED THERE YOUR WHOLE LIFE?
I lived there for eight years. Before then I lived in Los Angeles
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY YOU MISS THE MOST ABOUT HOME?
I miss my friends in Germany and I miss the weather in LA.
HAVE YOU HAD A CLASS TODAY?
I had my First Year Seminar which is Care and Suffering. I had my last class. The professor is the nicest professor I’ve ever met in my life. Her name is Nancy Worthington. She’s a visiting professor so she’s gone after the semester. She was so accommodating and so approachable. Since I’ve never taken an Anthropology class, I was like, “What am I doing?” So anytime I was unsure I would go to her and she would help me no questions asked.
FAVORITE SPOT ON CAMPUS?
I don’t want to say because I’m scared that people are going to go there and it’s going to be corrupted.
DO YOU BELIEVE IN GHOSTS? IF SO, WHERE ON CAMPUS DO YOU THINK IS MOST LIKELY TO BE HAUNTED?
I do believe in ghosts. And I think that the place that is most likely to be haunted is probably either the Stacks of Olin or it’s the Philosophy Department. It’s Russell House. It’s like nineteenth century and very beautiful but it's creepy as fuck.
WHAT SONG DID YOU MOST RECENTLY HAVE STUCK IN YOUR HEAD?
It was “Franz Liszt”. It’s this German name which is “Love Dreams”. I’m not that into classical music but this song makes me cry and I’ve just been listening to it, a lot lately.
WHAT ARE THREE OF YOUR FAVORITE FILMS?
“Vertigo”, “Marnie”, and, “Jaws”. I love Hitchcock [films], first of all. They were some of the first movies I watched growing up. And I would watch them in a movie theater in LA that shows older films. So it was a really big experience. And for “Jaws”, I have this thing with two of my best friends from LA. For a while every summer we would watch “Jaws”, during peak summer months when you really want to go to the beach. And it would freak us out and it was a big thing for us; so it reminds me of them.
WHERE DO YOU USUALLY STUDY?
Olin. I like to think that I can study when there're people talking and music [playing] but I can’t. SciLi is fun for socializing but when I actually need to get stuff done I go to Olin.
IF YOU COULD CHOOSE 2 CELEBRITIES TO BE YOUR PARENTS, WHO WOULD YOU PICK?
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
WHAT'S THE COOLEST/MOST INTERESTING THING ABOUT YOU THAT YOU WOULD WANT OTHER PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT?
I have a black-belt in karate. My parents made me do lots of sports stuff and extracurricular stuff when I was little and one of those things was karate. I bring it up when people piss me off.
HOW WOULD YOU BEST DESCRIBE YOURSELF TO SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T KNOW YOU AT ALL?
I think I’m a pretty genuine person. I am very blunt. That’s either a good thing or a bad thing. I don’t know.
TELL THE STORY BEHIND ONE PIECE OF CLOTHING IN YOUR WARDROBE?
Well, I own a wedding dress. It’s hand-made and I don’t know where it’s from. Well, it was handmade somewhere I guess and brought to a thrift store in LA. So I was thrift shopping with a friend and I was like, “I’m going to try it on. It looks like it will fit”. And it fit me literally perfectly; it was insane. And I bought this probably when I was fourteen, I had no need. And I spent all my money, like sixty bucks.
DO YOU WEAR IT? WHAT STORE WAS IT FROM?
No, it doesn’t fit me anymore. Puberty was a bitch. But at least I have a prepubescent wedding dress. I think it was called American Vintage or something.
FAVORITE ARTIST OR SONG?
It’s so ridiculous but I have to share. “Hotel California” has been in my head for years. I cannot stop thinking about it and my friend hates me because I play it every time I’m in her room. Like, seventeen times in a row.
FAVORITE PARTY SPOT AT WESLEYAN?
I love like a low-key dorm pregame-hangout.
DO YOU BELIEVE IN ASTROLOGY? WHAT IS YOUR SIGN?
I do believe in astrology because my best friend is obsessed with astrology. She does not stop talking about it. I’m a Leo and the crazy thing is that it’s freakishly accurate. Literally last week we almost cried because we looked up both our horoscopes and in both of them it said we would have conflict. And obviously it had to be with each other. So we had a conflict! It was something stupid but then we both ended up having other conflicts with other people too. And we are not conflict-y people. It was real.
MOST INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE?
Definitely my family. My brother and my parents.
FAVORITE CONCERT YOU HAVE BEEN TO?
I went to Outside Lands [in San Francisco, CA] this summer. And I saw Gorillaz, The Who, and Solange. Those three fucked me up. I love them. The only thing I hated was Metallica.
A STYLE YOU WANT TO BRING BACK? A STYLE YOU WANT TO KILL?
A style I want to bring back is Sixties Mod. A style I want to kill is… sorry, Birkenstocks. Wait I’m going to get so much hate for this. Sorry Wesleyan.
BIGGEST PET PEEVE? When people don’t hold doors. I get mad at my friends for this. Ten minutes ago my best friend didn’t hold the door for someone and I was so embarrassed. I ran back and held it.
HOW FAR IS A COMFORTABLE AMOUNT TO HOLD THE DOOR?
I like to have fun with it. I’ll purposely make it weird by like holding it for so long. People will have to jog so it’s a funny moment. People have done that to me and it’s kind of funny. I try not to do it super often. It’s a judgement call.
You see them wandering campus in packs, lanyards a swingin'. Ever wondered who they are? What they do? Where they go? Get up close and personal with these fresh freshmen faces on campus with project #findnewfriends, a series started by Method Magazine in 2014 - now done for the Method section for The Artifex - that focuses on the individuals that make up the new freshman class.
